The 1960s was a musical revolution that changed everything. The decade began with the more polished pop of artists like The Beatles, whose appearance on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' in 1964 sparked 'The British Invasion' and a wave of pop hysteria across the world. At the same time, the Detroit Motown sound was creating a new kind of soul music with artists like The Supremes and Marvin Gaye, whose songs combined irresistible melodies with elegant production. This early part of the decade was characterised by an infectious optimism and a belief that music could unite people, laying the groundwork for the more experimental and socially critical movements that would follow.
In the second half of the decade, music became a central part of the counterculture and a voice for an entire generation. Artists such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez used their lyrics to comment on social injustice and protest the Vietnam War, giving folk music a new political charge. Meanwhile, psychedelic rock exploded with bands like The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, who pushed the boundaries of music with new sounds, long improvisations and a stage presence that was both hypnotic and provocative. It all culminated in legendary festivals like Woodstock in 1969, a manifestation of peace, love and music that would forever symbolise the spirit of the 60s.
